I have been clean for over 2 years in NA. After reading a lot of the online "cult" literature about AA, I can see a lot of it in my story. When I came to NA, I was at a complete bottom, so I was "ready", or open minded and so I was quite susceptible to the sloganistas. All I know was it was keeping me clean and nothing on my own had done so. I will probably keep going to meetings, but they will never seem the same.
One of the problems I see, is that the programs tend to spring load relapses. I see people "go back out" and it is like they are on fire! They go nuts, far more usage than just a slip might be, usually. It is like, If I am going to relapse, let's go for it! Let's do it all, and get it all out of our system. This could be dangerous. Not to mention how hard it is to come back after such a relapse with the hazing atmosphere. All the talk is about a relapse being so bad, so brutal, that maybe it creates just such a response when a slip does occur.
